Story Pod Project - Grassroots Transformation of Civic Space
May 16, 2019
Newmarket’s story pod was launched in 2015 in partnership with HollisWealth Inc., AKB, Scholastic and the Newmarket Public Library. The pod welcomes residents and visitors to read, learn, find inspiration, share stories and engage with the community. In turn. During the day, two of the walls pivot open like the covers of a book, welcoming people inside or to gather around the front. Visitors can take or leave something to read, or lounge quietly on the built-in seating. At night, when the doors are locked, recessed, energy efficient LED lights, powered by concealed, self-sustaining solar panels on the roof, glow through the lattice work like a lantern, providing ambience for night markets or community events. |

Pancreatic Cancer Canada
Jun. 06, 2019 6:30 p.m.
This year an estimated 5,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Most of these patients will be given less than a year to fight, to live their lives, and make memories with their families. At Pancreatic Cancer Canada, we see the desperate need for more effective treatments that will give patients more quality time with their loved ones. We believe the greatest chance we have at creating a brighter future for those with pancreatic cancer is by working with the most innovative researchers and clinicians across the country through the PancOne™ network. Pancreatic cancer is set to be the 2nd deadliest cancer by 2030. We have also piloted a brand-new support program for families and patients to offer wholistic counselling through the different stages of this disease. Our unique and targeted collaboration with Wellspring was launched last year and we had such tremendous results, we are expanding it throughout the country. Our last pillar of support is to educate and support the 10,000 general practitioners to promote early diagnosis and awareness of pancreatic cancer. |

Demonstrating the value of membership in Rotary International !
Aug. 22, 2019
August in Membership and New Club Development Month. One of my goals this year is to assist Club Presidents with strengthening their clubs. I believe the key to membership retention is engagement. We are great at attracting people to Rotary, but we need to engage them in social activities and service projects to retain them as members. The Rotary Club of Toronto Beach will soon be newly chartered, and we are examining the possibility of a new club in Vaughan Let’s demonstrate the value of membership in Rotary International and grow Rotary! |

Roncy Reduces
Oct. 17, 2019
Tina is an environmental educator in her second career after raising three children (now 14, 18 and 21). As part of her masters degree in environmental education She did an internship at the High Park Nature Centre where she is now a part time staff as nature interpreter.
Tina founded Roncy Reduces in January of this year with a bunch of Roncesvalles neighbours. They found each other by an email that was going around among neighbours, school connections (being parents at the same school) and friends. They are a group of 8-12 people, almost all women and meet on a monthly basis. Our capstone event was at the Revue Cinema in June when we showed the documentary The Clean Bin Project, made a presentation about Roncy Reduces, showed a slide show with all 70 businesses involved and had a speaker from, Charlotte Ueta from Toronto Waste Management. They also reached out to five neighbourhood schools with workshop, a poster contest and two school screenings. Come on the 17th to hear more!
